Negotiate gross, live on net

300 € more per month sounds great – until the first payslip arrives. Because of Germany's progressive income tax (marginal rates of 14–45 % in 2026) plus roughly 20 % social security, additional income is hit much harder than your first euros. This calculator compares your net salary before and after the raise, so you know exactly what to expect. Negotiating from a net target instead? Use the net-to-gross calculator to derive the gross figure you should ask for.

FAQ: Salary increases in Germany

Why do I keep so little of my raise in Germany?
Every additional gross euro is taxed at your marginal rate plus social security – not at your average rate. For middle incomes this marginal burden quickly reaches 45–50 %. Of a 300 € raise, typically only 150–170 € arrive as net.
Can a raise ever leave me with less money in Germany?
No – that is a myth. The German tax schedule has no jumps: more gross always means more net. The higher rate applies only to the additional income, never to your whole salary.
What salary increase is common in Germany?
Regular annual rounds usually bring 3–5 %, taking on new responsibilities 5–10 %. Statistically the biggest jump comes from changing employers, where 10–20 % more is realistic.
Are there tax-efficient alternatives to a raise?
Yes – benefits often arrive almost untaxed: vouchers up to 50 € per month, public transport subsidies (Deutschlandticket), company pension contributions, a job bike, or internet allowances. With a high marginal burden, a mix of raise and benefits can deliver more net.
Do social security contributions stop at some point?
Contributions are capped at the assessment ceilings: above 5,812.50 € gross per month no additional health/care contributions apply (2026), above 8,450 € no additional pension/unemployment contributions. Beyond these thresholds, more of each raise reaches your account.
