How your German net salary is calculated in 2026
In Germany, two large blocks are deducted from your gross salary: taxes (income tax, plus solidarity surcharge and church tax where applicable) and social security contributions (pension, health, long-term care and unemployment insurance). Income tax follows the progressive tax formula of §32a EStG with a basic tax-free allowance of 12,348 euros in 2026. Social security contributions add up to around 20 to 22 percent of your gross pay – each up to the contribution assessment ceiling (2026: 8,450 euros per month for pension insurance, 5,812.50 euros for health and long-term care insurance).
Your tax class, your federal state, child allowances and your health insurer's additional contribution also affect the result. You can find all the background in our guides on German tax classes, the 2026 tax table and the German social security system.
