Everything you need to know about part-time work and pay in Germany

The part-time salary is calculated proportionally to the reduced working hours. For example, if you reduce from 40 to 30 hours per week, you receive 75% of your full-time gross salary. Due to progressive taxation in Germany, the net loss is often smaller than the gross loss, since a lower marginal tax rate applies to lower incomes.

Under the German Part-Time and Fixed-Term Employment Act (Teilzeit- und Befristungsgesetz, TzBfG), employees in companies with more than 15 employees are entitled to reduce their working hours after at least 6 months of employment, provided no urgent operational reasons prevent it. You should submit your part-time request to your employer in writing at least 3 months before the desired start date.

Part-time work reduces your pension points proportionally to the lower income. If you halve your working hours, you only accumulate half the pension points. If you work part-time permanently, you should check the impact on your retirement provision and, if necessary, save privately, for example via a Riester pension or an occupational pension scheme.

Since 2019 there is bridge part-time (Brückenteilzeit) under Section 9a TzBfG. It allows employees in companies with more than 45 employees to reduce their working hours for a period of 1 to 5 years and then automatically return to their original full-time position. This removes the risk of being permanently stuck in the part-time trap.

Due to progressive taxation in Germany, the net loss with part-time work is often smaller than the gross loss. The net hourly wage can even be higher with part-time work than with full-time work, since a lower marginal tax rate applies. About the part-time calculator

The part-time calculator estimates your expected salary at reduced working hours and compares it with your full-time salary. The calculation is based on the current German tax and social security rates for 2026.

Factors taken into account:

  • - Proportional salary adjustment: gross pay is calculated from the ratio of hours
  • - Tax progression: lower income = lower marginal tax rate
  • - Social security: pension, health, long-term care and unemployment insurance with 2026 contribution ceilings
  • - Hourly wage: gross and net hourly wage compared
