Hourly wage vs. monthly salary in Germany

Comparing a freelance day rate with a permanent position, or two job offers quoted differently? German payroll uses the standard formula monthly salary = hourly wage × weekly hours × 4.33. This calculator converts in both directions and also shows the net values – because only the net hourly wage makes offers truly comparable. FAQ: Hourly wages in Germany

How do I convert an hourly wage to a monthly salary in Germany?
Monthly salary = hourly wage × weekly hours × 4.33. The factor 4.33 comes from 52 weeks divided by 12 months. Example: 20 € × 40 hours × 4.33 = 3,464 € gross per month.
What is the minimum wage in Germany in 2026?
The statutory minimum wage is 13.90 € per hour since 1 January 2026 and rises to 14.60 € on 1 January 2027. At 40 hours per week, the 2026 minimum wage equals roughly 2,408 € gross per month.
What is a good hourly wage in Germany?
The median gross earnings of full-time employees were 54,066 € per year in 2025 – about 26 € per hour at a 40-hour week. Anything above that is in the upper half of the wage distribution; around 20 € corresponds roughly to the lower third.
Why is my net hourly wage so much lower than gross?
Income tax plus pension, health, long-term care and unemployment insurance take 30–45 % of gross pay depending on salary and tax class. A 20 € gross hourly wage in tax class 1 leaves about 13–14 € net.
Are breaks part of paid working time in Germany?
Statutory rest breaks (30 minutes for shifts over 6 hours, 45 minutes over 9 hours) are unpaid by default. Many collective agreements grant paid short breaks on top.
