From target net to gross salary

Rent, living costs, savings – personal budgets are planned in net terms, but German job offers are negotiated in gross. This reverse calculator bridges the gap: enter the net amount you need, and it computes the gross salary you have to ask for, taking income tax, solidarity surcharge, optional church tax and all social security contributions into account. Because of Germany's progressive tax rates (14–45 % in 2026), the relationship is not linear – the more you earn, the more gross each additional net euro costs. FAQ: Net-to-gross in Germany

How does the net-to-gross conversion work?
There is no direct formula from net to gross because German taxes and contributions depend on the gross amount. The calculator therefore searches iteratively: it tries gross values until the desired net is matched exactly, to the euro.
How much gross do I need for 2,500 € net in Germany?
In tax class 1 (public health insurance, no children, no church tax) you need roughly 3,750–3,850 € gross per month in 2026. In tax class 3 (married, higher earner) about 3,300–3,400 € is enough. Use the calculator above for your exact situation.
Why do I need almost 1,000 € more gross for 500 € more net?
Because of tax progression: every additional euro is taxed at your marginal rate, which is higher than your average rate. For middle incomes, marginal tax plus social security quickly reaches 45–50 % – so only about half of each additional gross euro arrives in your account.
Who is the reverse calculator useful for?
Mainly for salary negotiations ("I need X net – what should I ask for?"), for expats moving to Germany who plan with net amounts, for freelancers switching to employment, and for budgeting after a job change or parental leave.
Does the result include child benefit or allowances?
No – the calculator determines pure employment income. Child benefit (Kindergeld, 259 € per child per month in 2026), tax-free allowances and benefits in kind come on top of the calculated net.
