Gross vs. net — What is left of your salary?

In Germany, wage tax (Lohnsteuer), the solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag, if applicable), church tax (Kirchensteuer) and social security contributions (pension, health, long-term care and unemployment insurance) are deducted from the gross salary. With an average salary of 4,300 € gross, about 2,830 € net remains in tax class I — a deduction rate of around 34 %.

The most important deductions at a glance:

  • Pension insurance: 9.3 % employee share (capped at the contribution assessment ceiling of 8,450 €/month)
  • Health insurance: 7.3 % + approx. 1.45 % supplementary contribution (varies by insurer)
  • Long-term care insurance: 1.8 % (childless employees over 23: +0.6 %)
  • Unemployment insurance: 1.3 %
  • Wage tax: according to tax class and the income tax scale (Section 32a of the German Income Tax Act, EStG)

Gender pay gap in Germany

The gender pay gap — the difference between the average gross hourly wages of men and women — stands at around 17 % (unadjusted) in Germany in 2026. This still places Germany among the countries with an above-average pay difference between the sexes in a European comparison.

The adjusted gender pay gap, which factors out structural differences such as industry choice, working hours and qualification level, is about 6 %. This means that even in the same job with comparable qualifications, women earn less than men on average.

The main causes are the unequal distribution of care work, a higher share of part-time employment among women, and lower representation in leadership positions and technical professions.

Salary trends in Germany

Nominal wages in Germany have risen steadily in recent years. Between 2020 and 2026 the average annual salary growth was around 3.5 to 4.5 %. However, part of this increase was eaten up by elevated inflation (especially in 2022/2023).

For 2026, economic research institutes expect real wage growth of about 1.5 to 2 %. Skilled workers in IT, engineering, nursing and the trades are in particularly high demand, which is pushing salaries in these sectors up faster than average.

The increase of the minimum wage and the mini-job limit to 603 € also has a positive effect on the lower income brackets.
